The Colour Collaborative: June 2013

2013 2013 2013

I took these photos in my finally finished (but for some wall hooks and a door handle) studio, but for the life of me I can't seem to manage a single decent pic of the studio itself. The room's too small! I need such a wide angle to shoot it it's giving me vertigo. And I'm having to stand in places where I'm either blocking the light or shooting into it which is playing havoc with my exposure. Any and all tips on interiors photography will be really gratefully received folks!

Part of the problem, I think, is that although the walls, table, and chair are white, the only other furniture, three Billy bookcases with half glass doors, is such a dark brown it's almost black. I love the look - my <a target + "_blank" href="http://pinterest.com/AnnieCholewa/studio-colour-scheme-mood-board/">Studio Colour Scheme Pinterest board illustrates the colours I aimed for* - but it's proving blimmin' hard to photograph! I found myself envying Gillian the seemingly easily won pics she posts of her lovely home. And that got me thinking about the colour choices we make for our surroundings, which I'd argue tell you more about a person than the colour choices they make for their clothes.

Apparently my colour preferences, for pretty much everything, tell you I'm an odd ball. My two favourite colours? White and grey**. Researchers reckon only 1% of women would cite either of those colours as their favourites, and only 2% of men. They say that almost everywhere in the world almost everyone will tell you that blue is their favourite colour. To which my immediate response would be 'Which blue'? Just as I could tell you which whites I prefer ... chalk white, milk white, daisy white ... colour for me is a kind of poetry.

This probably has something to do with my having slight colour-sound and word-sound synasthesia, something my parents picked up on when I told them, aged about three, that the nursery song 'Pop goes the Weasel' was pink. My husband is red-green colour blind. Shopping for anything colourful gets complicated around here!

Of course we all perceive colours differently, have different colour associations, and use colours in different ways, and a bunch of us got to thinking that it might be fun to explore those differences further, and see what we might learn from them ... thus The Colour Collaborative was born! You can read a little more about the why and the how just below but suffice to say here that we're launching today but that our posts won't all be published at the same time, you may need to check back to see everyone's contribution. And in future although this is intended to be a monthly affair we won't necessarily all post on the same day. The whole thing is a work in progress that will, we hope, evolve and grow over time.

What is The Colour Collaborative? All creative bloggers make stuff, gather stuff, shape stuff, and share stuff. Mostly they work on their own, but what happens when they work together? Is a creative collaboration greater than the sum of its parts? We think so and we hope you will too. Starting small, with just five members for now, we'll each be offering our own monthly take on a colour related theme, and hoping that in combination our ideas will encourage us, and perhaps you, to think about colour in new ways.
