Getting evasive over tax 2013

Nonetheless it’s apparently the new mantra at HMRC where doctors, plumbers and electricians are on the shit-list for evasion checks.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">The <b>Guardian</b> reveals however that having been given an extra £1bn to track down small scale tax evaders, the initiative has so far only raised about £600m in previously unpaid revenues.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Official thinking is that so-called middle-earners are easier to squeeze and a lot less likely to have the same expert financial advice to hand as Vodafone who owed the Exchequer £8billion until the debt was wiped out by a controversial “sweetheart” deal. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Independent taxation specialists disagree and say the HMRC is blowing smoke out of its asset evaluation process. Earlier claims that evasion prosecutions are on the decrease have also been treated with scepticism given the <b><a href="http://insideoutswansea.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/its-all-just-matter-of-perspective.html"><span style="color: #660000;">sources involved</span></a>.</b><o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">As tax researcher Richard Murphy wrote at the time, <i>Staff have been cut by over a third at HMRC in a&nbsp;decade&nbsp;and ten&nbsp;thousand&nbsp;more jobs are meant to be going and yet, apparently, evasion is down.
